YOUNG St VINCENT de PAUL

Youth SVP at Camp Vincent - July 2008

Over 200 Youth SVP members from throughout the country attended the annual Camp Vincent at Ampleforth.

During the four days, workshops were held to strengthen their Vincentian commitment as well as having time for sporting activities and entertainment by way of a ceilidh and karaoke.

Peter Reed, President of the SVP Conference, writes

"I have just returned from Camp Vincent at Ampleforth to be told the news that 10 churches in Preston are threatened with closure, partly due to falling attendances.

If churches today could only harness the tremendous enthusiasm I saw amongst 240 youngsters (sorry 239 plus this old one!), attendances would be rising.

Their rousing singing may upset traditionalists but how long will traditionalists last. I have been going to the Camp for eight years now and each year I come back re-invigorated by the youngsters.

Let's face it, the Church has to appeal to the young who are the future. What better way than through their style of music. The Youth SVP Mass on the last day of Camp is an inspiration. There is role-play throughout with the readings being acted out.

I accept that this prolongs the Mass and could not be used every Sunday but it does mean the congregation TAKES AN ACTIVE PART in the Mass rather than the traditional passive attendance.

Food for thought !"
