It seems that a lot of people haven't and many of those who have appear to be under a misapprehension of what we do.
We are not a secret society and we don't spend our weekends running jumble sales or fund raising for the church or charities.
We are a group of Catholic men who get together once a month for a short meeting followed by a meal and a good chat. Three or four times during the year we invite our wives and friends to join us for our meal.
In between each meeting we usually arrange a social function which could be a barbecue at a member's house, a canal cruise, a trip to the races or the theatre, a dinner dance or just a gentle ramble through the countryside. Most of the social functions involve wives and friends and many are suitable for children.
The Catenian Association has some 11,000 members worldwide, the vast majority of whom are from the UK. There are no strict geographical boundaries but our local branch, which is known as a "Circle", covers roughly the parishes of St Teresa's, St Mary Magdalen's and St Oswald's.
We are always on the lookout for new members and would particularly welcome enquiries from people under 40 although this does not preclude older people from joining.
We are arranging an "open night" at Penwortham Golf Club on Tuesday 20 October 2009 where interested people can meet up with some of our existing members for an informal chat and presentation followed by a hot pot supper and a few drinks.
There will be no charge and no obligation for attending this event.
