Archbishop’s Statement on Restoring the Order of the Sacraments of Initiation
Archbishop Kelly last year issued this statement regarding the Sacrament of Confirmation.
In faithfulness to the appeal Pope Benedict made in Sacramentum Caritatis and having been encouraged to do so by the Council of Priests, I have decided that the diocese should move towards restoring the traditional order of the Sacraments of Initiation : Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist.
A working party has been established to explore the processes and resources we will need in order to enable parishes and schools to support parents in their right and responsibility, made clear in the Rite of Infant Baptism, to hand on faith to their children.
Apart from the decision to restore the traditional order, no decisions have been made about ages, policies or programmes : the working party will consider those issues over the next three years, reporting regularly to the Council of Priests and making recommendations about consultation, resources and formation.

Waste Paper collections
In 2009 we raised £2031 from the paper collections in the 2 parishes.
Donations have been made to both our Primary Schools, to North West Children’s Support Group (taking handicapped children on short breaks), to St Teresa’s Orphan Foundation in India, to the Lourdes Youth Group and donations to several teenagers who have spent time on voluntary work overseas.
Thanks ever so much for your tremendous support.
Do try to remember to bring your paper to our skips (the ones outside St Teresa’s are there permanently) so that we can support charitable causes during this year without any great effort.
Safeguarding Children, Young People
& Vulnerable Adults
The new Vetting and Barring System will be introduced shortly.
All new volunteers for pastoral work in the parishes which bring them into regular contact with such groups will need to go on the ISA register - it will be mandatory.
Will anyone presently engaged be sure that they have CRB clearance.
Will all newcomers contact our Safeguarding Officers, Andrew Walker for St Teresa’s or Carmel McKeogh for St Mary Magdalen’s so that they can complete the necessary paperwork.
Telephone Andrew Walker on 743085 or Carmel McKeogh on 490633.
Mgr Wach will offer the Traditional Mass at St Mary Magdalen’s, with the parish choir, on 21 February 2010 at 9.00am. Mgr Wach is the Prior for the community of priests who cover the Latin Mass on Sundays at St Mary Magdalen’s.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
Many of us carry mobile phones with names and numbers stored in its memory. If we were to be involved in accident, or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call
Yes, there may be hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this "ICE" Campaign.
The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly; it is a method of contact during emergency situations.
As mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person (or persons) who should be contacted in emergency using the name "ICE".
The idea was thought up by a Paramedic who found that when he went to scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones with patients but they didn't know which number to call.
He thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognised name for this purpose.
In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital staff would then be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the the number you have stored as "ICE".
It won't take too many "forwards" before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest.
For more than one contact name, simply enter "ICE1", "ICE2", "ICE3" etc.
Please bring this information to as many people as possible as this can really help those involved in an emergency situation.

CLIFF SALE'S CHARITY CYCLE CHALLENGE
This year, to celebrate my 40th birthday, my wife, Sue has decided that I should mark it in some way.
I suggested a nice weekend away in a cosy pub and she suggested I travel to the other side of the world and cycle the 400km from Vietnam to Cambodia in searing heat whilst avoiding rabid dogs and land mines !!!!
So, In November 2009, I shall be cycling from Vietnam to Cambodia to raise money for the New Children's Hospital Appeal.
We are aiming to raise £20m to buy equipment for the new hospital in Manchester as well as providing better accommodation for those parents who need to stay with their child whilst they receive treatment.
My own daughter, Holly, is a regular outpatient at one of the current children's hospitals in Pendlebury and I know that a number of her school friends at St Mary Magdalen's have also received treatment there.
I am planning a number of events to raise money including a charity car wash on the car park at St Mary's Magdalen's on Saturday 25 April 2009 from 9.00am.
Sponsorship forms will be available in the entrance halls of both churches in the next week or so and you can also sponsor me on line at by following this link.
Donating through the Justgiving web site is quick, easy and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me. The Central Manchester & Manchester Children's University Hospitals Charity gets your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid and a 3% supplement are added to your donations.
I do hope you can help - thank you.
SPONSORSHIP EVENTS

He added " I'm grateful to all those who came along and I'm hoping to do another shortly."
Penwortham Gala
Cliff says "I will have a stall at the Penwortham Gala this Saturday, 13 June 2009.
There will be refreshments and fundraising activities for the children, including the chance to find and win a treasure chest of sweets with a pirate treasure map, a teddy tombola and the opportunity to paint your own door name plaque.
And as ever, all the proceeds got to the New Children's Hospital Appeal."
Charity Car Wash
Cliff will be holding a further charity car wash on the car park at St Mary's Magdalen's Church on Saturday 8 August 2009 between 9.00am and 5.00pm.
Your continued support is greatly appreciated.
Remember you can also donate through the Justgiving web site - it is quick, easy and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me. The Central Manchester & Manchester Children's University Hospitals Charity gets your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid and a 3% supplement are added to your donations.
Cliff says "Thanks to everyone who came along and supported the event which raised a tremendous £150."
Wine tasting evening
Cliff says "I'm holding a Wine Tasting Evening to help raise funds for my Vietnam to Cambodia cycle challenge in November.
You've just got to come to Penwortham Golf Club on Thursday 8 October; the tasting starts at 7.30pm and a variety of wines will be available to try with accompanying nibbles of course. The money raised will go towards the New Children's Hospital Appeal.
All inclusive tickets are just £10 - just contact me on 01772 740099 or at farfield@tiscali.co.uk or even after the 10.30am mass at St Mary Magdalen's.
Everybody is welcome - just make sure you reserve a ticket."
Cliff Sale's Charity Cycle Challenge
Not long to go now before Cliff sets off on his cycle trip from Vietnam to Cambodia but you can still donate to this most worthy of causes through the Justgiving web site. It is quick, easy and totally secure to donate so please give what you can.
Go on, click here and give generously - what better way to spend your money than to help our young children.
The Central Manchester & Manchester Children's University Hospitals Charity gets your money faster this way and, if you are a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure that 25% in Gift Aid and a 3% supplement are added to your donations.
Cliff adds "I do hope you can help - thank you in anticipation."

DIGITAL SWITCHOVER
Dear Colleague,
Digital TV Switchover in the Granada TV region will happen in two stages on 4 November 2009 and 2 December 2009. Free Switchover training and grants are available.
As you know the UK wide switch to digital TV is underway. This means that everyone must have converted or upgraded their TV to digital in order to continue watching TV after the switchover. In the Granada area, the TV signal is provided by the Winter Hill transmitter and its relay stations.
| TRANSMITTER GROUP (including relays) |
SERVING | STAGE ONE | STAGE TWO |
| Winter Hill | Liverpool, Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire and north Staffordshire | 4 November 2009 | 2 December 2009 |
For many people television is an important source of entertainment and company and the process of changing from analogue to digital may be worrying. That’s why it is so important for us to work closely with charities and voluntary organisations to make sure everyone gets the support they need.
Switchover Help Scheme
Those aged 75 or over, who have lived in a care home for six months or more, get (or could get) certain disability benefits, or are registered blind or partially sighted, are eligible for support from the Switchover Help Scheme to convert one TV set to digital.
Every eligible person will be offered practical help, including equipment, installation and aftercare, to convert one of their TV sets to digital in the run-up to switchover in their region. The Help Scheme writes to all eligible people three times to let them know what help they can receive. It costs £40, or for those entitled to certain income-related benefits it is free.
Digital Outreach Ltd
Digital Outreach Ltd has been set up by leading charities to deliver the digital switchover community outreach programme on behalf of Digital UK, the organisation responsible for leading the switchover across the UK.
Some people not eligible for support via the Switchover Help Scheme, or who choose not to take it up, may also need help to switch. The outreach programme works through local charities and voluntary organisations to provide that support.
Digital Outreach has appointed Age Concern Lancashire in partnership with Age Concerns – Preston & South Ribble, Hyndburn, Blackpool & District and Blackburn with Darwen as the lead local organisation in the Granada TV region. We would like to work with your organisation to deliver a range of activities to assist people.
Booking your free training place
Training sessions are available designed for those in your organisation who will raise awareness of switchover and the Help Scheme who then can cascade that information to your staff and volunteers. There is no charge to attend. All will start at 9.30am and finish at 2.30pm with a lunch provided.
The next training session in your area is on;
Monday 27 July 2009 from 9.30am until 2.30pm
at St Mary’s Church Hall, Cop Lane, Penwortham, Lancs PR1 0SR
Please note this will also be the last training session to be held in the Lancashire area.
Grants, materials and other assistance
Other support available through us includes:
Small grants for new local switchover related activities or initiatives
Speakers for presentations and meetings
Good practice sharing and advice on local activities or initiatives
Switchover and Help Scheme leaflets and materials
We believe that it is vital that people receive the right information and advice to make the switch to digital and that those who most need it can look to a local organisation that they know and trust to provide it.
Please help us to reach out to people in the community.
Additionally an information pack from Digital UK has been designed to help your organisation share information about switchover with people in the community. The pack will contain a DVD explaining everything in more detail, plus leaflets, a poster, some bookmarks and a CD-ROM containing fact sheets that you can either print out or email.
For more information, materials or to book a free place at the training session, please contact :

DON'T BE FOOLED !!!
I received an email from a friend in the South; you may be interested in the details :
"The new telephone 'scam' has arrived.
I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.
The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly they have to pay BT a percentage for line rental.
I asked the guy's name - the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - and phone number - 0800 0800 152.
Obviously the fella realised I wasn't believing his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how and he told me to hang up and try phoning someone - he would disconnect my phone to prevent this.
AND HE DID!!
My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again.
Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made and he said credit card, there and then.
I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.
He hung up.
I dialled 1471 and phoned his fictitious 0800 number – not recognised.
I phoned the police to let them know, I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently but it is escalating.
Their advice was to let as many people know by word of mouth of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please let as many friends and family aware of this.
This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800152 which takes you through to BT Business.
The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out but he can hear you trying - (this is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it).
When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it could certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable. Obviously, if this scam is real, once they have your credit/debit card details, there is nothing to stop them cleaning out your account."

LADYEWELL - PILGRIMAGE
The Liverpool Archdiocesan Pilgrimage to Ladyewell, Fernyhalgh will take place on Saturday, 10 May 2008.
Archbishop Patrick Kelly will lead the Pilgrimage, which this year commences at 2.00pm; the exact programme at the Shrine is not yet known.
The SVP Conference will be providing mini-buses to convey pilgrims from the two parishes to the Shrine, picking up passengers at three points, yet to be decided, but suitable for the majority of passengers. The transport will be free of charge and is intended primarily, but not exclusively, for those who do not have their own transport.
Pilgrims should take warm, weather proof clothing and any food they may require - hot and cold drinks are available at Ladyewell House.
Those wishing to go should give their names to any member of the SVP or telephone Peter on 01772 743410, Tim on 01772 743403 or Terry on 01772 748049.
The picture shows Terry Conway and his wife leading the procession to Ladyewell for the Liverpool Archdiocesan Pilgrimage.
The afternoon of the 10 May 2008 proved to be fine and warm for the diocesan pilgrimage to Fernyhalgh when 11 parishioners from our parishes joined the forty-odd from other parishes to honour Our Lady at her Lancashire Shrine.
After the Rosary procession from St Mary's Church to Ladyewell House, led by Fr Tom Hoole, pilgrims were free to visit the Well, the Reliquary room and the Chapel or take refreshments before taking part in the Holy Hour and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at the Martyr's Chapel.
During Benediction, Fr Tom brought the Blessed Sacrament to each group of 2 or 3 pilgrims before imparting the general Benediction.
The experience of the afternoon was unique. A wonderful example of the uplifting spiritual effects of honouring Our Lady and a memory to treasure.
Why not join us next May?
WATER RATES
The Water Companies are ignoring churches' charitable status and starting to charge for the amount of area (ie roofs and car parks) that will collect rainwater and discharge it into the sewer network.
In the year to 5 April 2008, the Holy Family paid £461 in Water Rates. As a result of this change, their Water Rates will increase each year until they pay approximately £2,500 in the year to 5 April 2011.
If you wish to register your objection, click here (and tell anyone else who will provide their support).

CAFOD - WORLD GIFTS AT CHRISTMAS
World Gifts is a range of alternative gifts that act as two presents in one – something for you to give to friends or a relatives at special occasions, whilst the real gift can help change the life of someone living in poverty.
Each World Gift is a real example of the vital work by CAFOD supporting communities living in poverty around the world but they are also representative of much, much more than just the specific items described.
Each gift supports a Fund which belongs to a particular area of CAFOD's work with the promise that the money raised will be spent on relevant projects within that area.
This gives the flexibility to respond in ways that best meet the particular needs of many different communities.

MAN GIVES ALL HIS MONEY TO CHARITY
A pensioner has given all his money away to raise money for children and Aids orphans in Africa.
Joseph Tipping, 67, of Poplar Drive, Penwortham, near Preston, is a church officer at St Teresa's Catholic Church in Penwortham and a lay missionary for the Sons of Divine Providence SDP, an international Catholic organisation helping disadvantaged people all over the world.
Joseph retired from his job as a buyer at BAE Systems nine years ago to devote his life to raising money for the charity's projects in India, Brazil, the Philippines and Kenya.
Since then Joseph has worked tirelessly, raising enough cash to keep the projects running, including a chick scheme which saw hundreds of day-old chicks shipped to a village in Kenya to start an egg producing plant; a knitted teddy bear scheme for African Aids orphans who have no possessions of their own; and a bulb scheme, for which Joseph grow plants to sell for cash.
The turning point in his charitable work came when he visited two missions in Kenya and was struck by how few possessions the people have.
He said: "I went to Kenya and saw for myself the very poor conditions that people live in. I resolved to help them and I came home and started raising money. In my way it's God's work. These people have to be looked after. It's a wonderful country and people are struggling to get into the 21st century. They are quite happy even though they have nothing."
Joseph himself does not see his personal lack of cash as a problem. The central philosophy of the Sons of Divine Providence is the belief that, if there is a need, God will provide.
If you would like to donate money or get involved, call Joseph on 01772 743637.

PENSIONER'S TRIBUTE TO CARING CHURCHGOER
A Wigan pensioner has paid tribute to a fellow church-goer who has given away all his money away and dedicated himself to raising cash for children and Aids orphans in Africa.
Joseph Tipping, 67, of Penwortham, near Preston, is a church officer at St Teresa's RC Church in Penwortham and a lay missionary for the Sons of Divine Providence, an international Catholic organisation which helps disadvantaged people throughout the world. Joseph retired from his job as a buyer at BAE Systems nine years ago to devote his life to raising money for the charity's projects in India, Brazil, the Philippines and Kenya.
Since then he has raised enough cash to keep several projects running - including a chick scheme which saw hundreds of day-old chicks shipped to a village in Kenya to start an egg producing plant, a knitted teddy bear scheme for African Aids orphans who have no possessions of their own and a bulb scheme, for which Joseph grew plants to sell for cash.
Thomas Griffin, 76, from Standish, has known Joseph for many years through the Wigan-based Don Orione group, a branch of the SDP. He said: "He has spent all his money on it. He helps the whole thing. He's one of those people who can never say no."
Joseph does not see his personal lack of cash as a problem. The central philosophy of the Sons of Divine Providence is the belief that, if there is a need, God will provide.
Thomas's wife, Bernadette, also raises funds for Don Orione projects, both locally and abroad. She said: "Joseph is totally devoted to the Third World."
The turning point in Joseph's charitable work came when he visited two missions in Kenya and was struck by how few possessions the people have. He said: "I went to Kenya and saw for myself the very poor conditions that people live in. I resolved to help them and I came home and started raising money. In my way it's God's work. These people have to be looked after. It's a wonderful country and people are struggling to get into the 21st Century. They are quite happy even though they have nothing. The money raised goes straight out and is targeted so there are no administration charges at all."
Anyone wanting make a donation or to become involved in Joseph's work should contact him on 01772 743637.

MEMORIAL IN LEYLAND
From South Ribble Borough Council
A memorial will be created in Leyland to pay tribute to the lives of South Ribble service men and women who have died in conflict since 1945.
The decision follows the tragic death of Leyland Gunner Stephen Wright who was killed while escorting troops through Basra in September last year.
We are therefore appealing for the friends or family of anyone who was born in South Ribble, or lived in the borough and died in conflict since the end of the Second World War, to contact us in order that we may pay tribute to them also.
If you are able to give us any information would you please contact Lynda Mears on 01772 625542.

SAFEGUARDING WITH CONFIDENCE
In 2001, Lord Nolan, at Cardinal Murphy O'Connor's request, produced a report entitled "A Programme for Action". It set a framework for best practice in the prevention of abuse of children, vulnerable adults and of response to cases which had occurred. Five years later the Cardinal asked Baroness Cumberlege to review the effectiveness of that programme.
Her review has now been published under the title "Safeguarding with Confidence". It is available from the CTS (telephone 0207 640 0046) and is recommended reading for the widest public; it will be discussed at the Bishop's Conference in November.
CTS Order reference Do768, ISBN978 1 86082 462 3, price £10.00 + £1.00 p&p.

ST MARY MAGDALEN'S 20th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Fr Austin writes ...
"It's just 20 years since the opening of the new church of St Mary Magdalen, designed by the award winning architect Francis Roberts, who is also a parishioner.
It was Fr Trevor Cotter, Parish Priest from 1982, whose untiring efforts turned the dream into reality and raised the funds required.
Sadly Fr Cotter had to retire from active ministry a few years ago with failing eyesight and poor health. Within the year God called him to eternal life.
A simple tablet of slate, commissioned last year, now hangs above the sacristy entrance - a memorial to his faithful service to our parish and the Church.
To mark that opening 20 years ago, a full congregation of people from both St Mary Magdalen's and St Teresa's gathered on Monday 9 July for a moving celebration of Mass.
Under the direction of Caroline Hampson, with Margaret Greer at the organ, the choir and congregation, assisted by the fine acoustics of the Church, were able to give full voice to praising God.
To round off a short but moving Mass, Marjorie and Mildred generously provided us with tea and scones. But these scones were special, with Marjorie's homemade strawberry jam covered with Cornish clotted cream.
It was significant and special to have a group of children from the school in our congregation, immaculately turned out as usual.
If there is one thing I underlined, it is that these young people are the future of the Church. Please God, we have amongst the families who worship at St Mary Magdalen's, enough families of Faith to ensure that the future is orange and the sacrifice of the Mass is offered here."
